Questions raised over new Church Bay development By Sarla Donovan CHURCH BAY residents were scheduled to meet last night to discuss plans for a commercial development in Church Bay. The Bay Harbour News
understands some members of the Church Bay Neighbourhood Association have misgivings about the design. Spence Developments are proposing to build a supermarket and 111-space car park, four
shops, a cafe and a 30-seat cinema at 139-143 Marine Drive, behind the On the Spot store. Church Bay resident and neigbourhood association committee member Tracey Ower said the design needed to be sensitive to the
area. “We are a semi-rural, coastal environment and at the moment the proposal doesn’t reflect the place at all.” Last night’s meeting followed on from one held last Tuesday night, when about 100 people

CHURCH BAY residents aren’t totally convinced about the new commercial complex planned for their sleepy settlement (see page 1). A public meeting was held last week to give developers the opportunity to explain the complex to locals. It got the tentative thumbs up but quite a number of the people there were from Diamond Harbour. The Church Bay Neighbourhood Association was scheduled to meet last night, and the design of the complex appears to be a concern. Ferrymead Bays’ football side made it through to the final of the annual Coastal Spirit under-19 tournament at the weekend before going down to Dunedin’s Green Island 1-2 (see page 19). Sho Mathieson took the MVP award, and watch out for 15-year-old Mika Rabuka, who coach Chris Murphy predicts has a big future. –Barry Clarke

Almost 250 sign petition in bid to save ferry terminal bus park

By Julia Evans A 248-SIGNATURE petition pleading for bus parking to be saved at the Diamond Harbour ferry terminal has been sent to Mayor Lianne Dalziel. A letter and the petition was sent to the mayor, Environment Canterbury chief executive Bill Bayfield and Lyttelton Port Company chief executive Peter Davie by the Diamond Harbour Community Association. AssociaRichard tion chairman Suggate Richard Suggate expressed the community’s concerns regarding decreased bus access to the ferry terminal from three spaces to one. The petition aims “to ensure that within 100m of the terminal, there is adequate bus parking on the Lyttelton wharf and that there is a drop-off/pick-up zone for private vehicles.” Mr Suggate said the elderly, disabled or those with heavy parcels will have to walk from

ferry.” The association also wants ECan to ensure the bus service has adequate access to Lyttelton wharf by the ferry terminal and for the port company to ensure transport access is maintained. But Mr Suggate said the association is pleased the port company is looking at alternative options.

Using dance as a way Originally from South Africa, dance teacher Adriaan Beddie now lives in Scarborough with his husband Richard. He talks to Sarla Donovan about having the best job in the world

Where did your passion for dancing come from? It really came from a love of music. As a kid I loved dressing up and if a song came on, I just danced to it. And in South Africa, when we have a barbecue (a brai) we normally have music playing in the background and everybody just dances; my family is quite into dancing. None of them are trained, but they love it. I’m from a pretty big family – my grandmother was one of 21 children – so a birthday is also an excuse for a gettogether. Tell me about your life in South Africa. I was born and raised in Johannesburg in a family of three boys, in small town called Alberton. We didn’t have a lot of money; we’d just go to school and back so no money for recreational things. It wasn’t until I was 19 when I met one of my ex-partners – he was a manager at a dance studio and
that’s when it came to pass – I was there every day and they were like: “Hey, do you want to dance?” They threw me in the deep end and I started teaching. Wow, straight into teaching. You must have had some talent. (Laughs) The only talent I had was shaking my hips. I wasn’t a big people person because I was in the closet back in the day – being gay – but as soon as I came out, I just became this other person and fell in love with talking to people. I think that’s where the passion for teaching came about, just being with people and seeing the joy dancing could bring them. I always say teaching is my passion and I use dance as a tool to connect to people. What bought you to Christchurch? One of my ex-partners, his family lived in Ashburton and we made the jump of coming
over. But it’s a small town and if you don’t fit in it’s very hard. They ran a newspaper article on the gay boys in town. It was like ‘whoa . . .’ We were supposed to live in Christchurch but we landed on February 24, 2011, just after the earthquake so we had to stay in Ashburton. I had an insurance background so I worked at the EQC, but we used to own a dance studio back in Johannesburg with about six staff and 200 people going through the doors each month so it was a pretty big dance studio. When we came over I started with very small groups – but if you don’t fit in and don’t feel the right vibes it’s hard. So I went home and came back in 2013 but things didn’t really work out for us so we went our separate ways. I was planning to go back home and then I met Richard and he threw a spanner in the works.

to connect with elderly And now you’re married? Yes I am, going on two years in February – very happily married. We have two cats, our babies which we love to bits. We live in Scarborough and I teach at the Sumner Centre, the Mt Pleasant Community Centre and at my studio in town. You must miss your family. Have they been over to visit? Yes, mum and dad came over to the wedding last year – mum complained about the weather – even though it was February! But we had some nice days and then we had the Valentine’s Day earthquake which scared them a lot but they’ll definitely come back which is great. The wedding was held in Motukarara, a place called Iris Gardens. It was beautiful. What do you like doing when you’re not working? I call myself a house executive – I clean and do my own training and do a bit of dancing around the house. I try to keep up-to-date with the latest things, creating routines and just spending time reading up about different types of neurodegenerative diseases to see how dancing can help these people with neurological problems. Where did the idea of running

classes for Parkinson’s disease sufferers come from? Just before I met Richard I lived with a lady called Molly, who is
one of my very good friends; she was 93 and she was forced into a rest home after she broke her foot and couldn’t take care of herself. You can see the decline in people who don’t want to be there. So I thought, maybe, I should put on a dance class. Then I read up about dancing and dementia and how music brings out these memories. One of Richard’s friends who is involved in exercise as medicine introduced me to a rugby coach who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He also showed me a video about Parkinson’s and how dancing – because of the movement, the change of direction and the heart rate elevation – could help them; not just on a daily basis but also delay the disease’s progress. So, I thought, yes, here’s something I could do because I love dancing and I love music. I just have a knack for choosing the right music that triggers certain memories for people. We started training together and I got hold of the Parkinson’s Society and talked with physiotherapists who deal with Parkinson’s to see how I could incorporate certain movements into dancing. It has been quite transformative. It must be rewarding. It’s quite astounding. When
you see someone with terrible dyskinesia and they’re just all over the place; then, when they start moving to a waltz and just forget about the steps and listen to the music and the cues – it dissipates, it disappears. And for a moment in time, they’re free. The name for my dance studio ‘Dance to be Free’ came about from that. You must feel like you’ve got the best job in the world. It’s not a job when you like it! What’s the saying – if you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life? Beginners – who maybe don’t get the steps after the first or 10th or the 20th time sometimes say: “Oh Adriaan, don’t you get irritated with us?” I’m like: ‘No, I love it. As long as you’re smiling, I’m happy.’ Do you ever get sore feet? I sometimes teach nine hours a day back-to-back so when I get home – my husband’s really great, he cooks the dinner Tuesday-Thursday. I just feed my face, jump in the shower and go straight to bed. Our routine in the morning is to get up and do yoga together for 15min – I can’t live without it and that’s our special time together before we head out.

Himalayan mountaineer Ed Cotter passes away ONE OF New Zealand’s best known mountaineers, Edmund (Ed) Cotter died in Sumner last Thursday, aged 90. Mr Cotter took part in the first New Zealand Himalayan expedition in 1951 with Sir Edmund Hillary, two years before Sir Edmund and Tenzing Norgay became the first to ascend Mt Everest. The two were part of the expedition, along with George Lowe and Earle Riddiford, Mr Cotter featured in the Bay Harbour News in August after a large ginger cat began visiting residents at Edith Cavell Rest Home in Sumner - including Mr Cotter, who became one of the cat’s favourites. The ginger tom was nicknamed Mandu, in Mr Cotter’s honour, and was last month adopted by Mr Cotter’s daughter Jacqui. Mr Cotter died peacefully at Edith Cavell on October 19. A funeral will be held at The McFaddens Centre, in St Albans, Christchurch, at 1pm today.

Farmers meet in Little River to discuss meat prices
ALLIANCE GROUP’S shareholder farmers were told at a meeting in Little River that lamb, sheep and deer prices are likely to remain firm, while cow and bull prices could soften. Heather Stacy, Alliance’s general manager livestock and shareholder services, said prime beef prices should remain similar to last year at $5-$5.40/kg early season and $4.80$5.20/kg post-Christmas. However, she says bull and cow prices are under pressure and softening compared with last season. These are projected to be about $4.00-$5.00/kg early season and $4.70-$5.00/kg post-Christmas. She was outlining the forecasts during the Banks Peninsula stop of an annual roadshow in which senior executives travel the country, updating shareholders on the co-op’s business. “The influence of global supply out of Brazil, the United States and Australia is having a downward draw on prices,” she told shareholders. Farmers at the meeting were told demand for venison is very strong, but a risk exists that its high price on restaurant menus will prompting diners to substitute other meats.

These included the look of the buildings, noise and light pollution, car park size, signage, traffic, and whether there was sufficient demand. “When one man asked if we needed a movie theatre – three quarters of those in the hall said ‘yes.’ People also love the idea of having petrol pumps. There was concern over what would
go into the shops. People definitely don’t want fast food and they assured us that wouldn’t happen. It could be offices or a chemist.” Ms Turner said the aesthetics of the development were of primary concern. “We don’t want a concrete monstrosity.” Although the community had many questions, the general feeling at the end of the meeting was very positive, she said. “James Hook explained everything extremely well.” Gaye Wood, who is in her 70s, spoke towards the end
of the meeting about how the development would benefit her and other older residents in the area, gaining a round of applause. Ms Wood told the Bay Harbour News she had moved to Diamond Harbour two-and-ahalf years ago, for the lifestyle. “Half of the residents here are over 50. If the development goes ahead, it means I can stay here longer.” It was “inevitable” Diamond Harbour would need additional amenities as the population continued to increase, she said.

News PERMANENT: A temporary crossing point at the corner of Oxford and Winchester Sts may become permanent.
Roading changes likely By Sarla Donovan PROPOSED changes to bus stops and parking in central Lyttelton would result in the loss of five parking spaces. The city council wants to make the temporary pedestrian crossing point at the intersection of Oxford and Winchester Sts permanent and replace the two existing bus stops on Winchester and Oxford Sts, which are positioned close together, with a single bus stop outside Lyttelton School on Oxford St. This is expected to improve the sight lines for pedestrians using the zebra crossing on Oxford St
next to Sumner Rd, as the current bus stop limits visibility, the city council said. New P3/P120 parking restrictions are also proposed outside Lyttelton School to assist the pick-up/drop-off for parents, and for daytime visitors to the school and surrounding area. The proposals would mean some on-street parking being removed near the Winchester St crossing, north and south of the proposed new Oxford St bus stop and at the Oxford/ London St intersection. No-stopping signs would be installed instead. The city council said the no-stopping spaces would improve visibility for pedes-
trians crossing the roads, and for passengers getting on and off buses. If the two existing bus stops were removed, five on-street parking spaces would become available, with three additional spaces beside the Lyttelton School playing field. However, the proposed new no-stopping signs would mean five fewer car parks overall. Pupils pay their own way to school camp By Julia Evans PARENTS FROM Heathcote Valley School won’t have to empty their wallets for this year’s school camp. The year 7 and 8 pupils have been out in force busking, dog walking, cleaning, hosting bake sales and delivering copies of Bay Harbour News to raise money to cover their own camp fees. The final stash has been tallied and the 32 children have raised $4400 between them. Some pupils ended up with more than they needed, which was donated to the general fund to help out any children who
hadn’t quite met their target. For every $100 they earned, the pupils were put into a draw to win a $500 or $250 Harvey Norman voucher, which the company donated. Riley Malta took home first prize and Mia Fenton, who was away sick during the draw, won the second prize. Now they can look forward to the camp and spending four days at Peel Forest Eco Lodge learning teamwork, self-management, confronting self-doubt and learning more about the environment. The camp is often seen as the highlight for the senior pupils every year.
DIAMOND Harbour School took second in the national Garden to Table school of the year awards. It was the first year the awards have taken place and they attracted 70 entries nationwide from children and schools. Judges included gardening journalist Lynda Hallinan and chef and restauranteur Al Brown. Garden to Table executive officer Linda Taylor said the judges were “blown away” by the standard of applications received. “It’s fantastic to see such
enthusiasm for getting outside, being active and learning key skills that will see them through life. All the judges were incredibly impressed by the drive children showed for gardening,” she said. Diamond Harbour School programme co-ordinator Lisa Hurry said the garden provided jobs for everyone from muscle work like moving compost and cleaning out the chicken coop to garden art, seed-sowing and watering. “This diversity allows everyone to participate, creating a sense of community within the garden,” she said.

News Simple tips for keeping safe Lyttelton-based navigational safety officer Gary Manch has some simple tips to help you keep safe on the water this summer If you’ve been keeping up with the news lately, you may have noticed stories about the road toll creeping up, in spite of the efforts of regulatory authorities to make our roads safer. As I was thinking about this, it came to mind that even though motor vehicles and boats are completely different, they have one big similarity – they are controlled by humans. This, unfortunately, is the reason we tend to have a lot of incidents, both on the water and off. Mechanical failure rarely leads to injury or death – it’s more often the behaviour of drivers that is the problem. When you think about it, one moment of inattention or carelessness on the water can have disastrous consequences not only for the operator – who makes the mistake – but also for the innocent victims who are out enjoying the water. As Environment Canterbury’s navigation safety officer, I have no control over what happens on the roads but I do have the abil-

ity to try to change behaviour on our waterways. As we head into the 2017/18 boating season, here are some tips I would ask you to take on board. •First up, learn the boating rules because the more clued up you are, the more likely you are to enjoy your day safely. •Don’t drink alcohol until you have returned to the shore because alcohol can cause both skippers and passengers to behave recklessly.

•Ensure correctly-fitting lifejackets are worn at all times on the water because they may save your life. •Carry two forms of communication that will work in the area you are boating in. •Last, but not least – be courteous to other boaties, and respect swimmers and divers who are in the water nearby. Wastewater group called on to consider new information THE AKAROA wastewater management working party has reconvened after more technical information regarding the outfall plan has come to light. The Banks Peninsula Community Board received a report from city council staff, saying the party has been called back together after the Environment Court granted an extension for a decision on the plans for Akaroa’s wastewater outfall. “It has become necessary to reconvene this working party so that board members, community members and rūnanga representatives can consider
options for the re-use of treated wastewater in Akaroa,” the report said. The working party originally met from February to April and agreed on a joint statement regarding the disposal of Akaroa’s wastewater before the plan went out for broader consultation. The report said the objectives of the working party included assisting the city council to investigate and consult on options for wastewater disposal, considering the solutions presented by city council staff and independent experts and keeping the community informed on the plan’s progress.

Fire recovery is the November festival’s theme and walkers will get a chance to see the natural regeneration that has occurred in areas of Hinewai Reserve after the huge fire in 2011, as well as the major planting effort taking place at Ohinetahi Reserve since the Port Hills fire. Several landowners are opening their properties for the day, giving walkers a chance to appreciate the range of biodiversity conservation taking place on the peninsula. There will also be a chance to visit a remote area above Little River, all the covenants in French Farm, and a walk on the wildside in Fishermens Bay. Some popular favourites from past years are running again including grunts and dykes exploring Panama Reserve with Robin Burleigh, backyards of Lyttelton with Sue Ellen Sandilands, Takamatua waterfall and sketcha-walk. THE ELECTIONS in Germany were held over the same weekend as the election in New Zealand, and the latest news from there is that there may not be a Government formed before Christmas. People in New Zealand were getting frustrated at the length of time it took to form our Government but it was only a fortnight after the final election results were known. I guess that we are still not used to MMP – even though we have had this system of voting for over 20 years. But we now have a Government formed – a Labour-led
Government with coalition arrangements with NZ First and a confidence and supply agreement with the Green Party. All three parties will have Ministers, with Labour and NZ First in Cabinet and Labour and Green Party outside Cabinet. So how will this work? Well, for the last nine years, we have had a National-led Government with various support arrangements and partners. The last few years has had Act, United Future and the Maori Party keeping National’s majority in Parliament. The arrangements are not dissimilar now – just very different parties and very different policies. And I think it will work very well. Labour has set out an ambitious 100-day plan so after the commencement of Parliament at the beginning of November, we are going to be very busy. Free tertiary education (University and Polytechnic) starts on January 1, 2018, as does increases to allowances. Rental homes will be brought up to dry
and warm standard, and overseas resident speculators won’t be able to buy our homes. Sale of state houses will stop, paid parental leave will be increased and we will restart contributions into the NZ Superannuation Fund. Work will start on the clean-up of our rivers and lakes and climate change targets set. It’s big and ambitious – and needs to be done – and we can do it. Our two partners will have ambitious goals too and we will support them. But for me, work on the mental health and well being of our residents is the most important and pressing issue. We cannot accept 10 attempted suicides a day in our region. We cannot accept that people are not able to get help because of lack of resources. There are always many issues to tackle but for me, that’s number one. We will work hard in this Government for a fairer and kinder country. Thanks for the opportunity to make this happen.

The content of this page shows the busy life of a NZ secondary school. Education is about seeing the whole person and how these developmentally positive experiences enrich our students’ understanding of whom they are and broaden their outlook. They nurture students’ classroom focus by contextualising their learning and sowing the seeds of positive ambition. Linwood College believes in a ‘pathwayed curriculum’. This means the school, students and families knowing: 1. students’ past learning and skills as they come into LC from our partner primary schools and building on these successes 2. how the learning at LC connects to what the students want to do when they leave school. “What are my post-school pathways and how does my LC learning help me to achieve these pathways?” In this way learning is meaningful to the individual and strengths-based.
College's Car Club Connected to these student pathways are the national development of Kāhui Ako-Communities of Learning. Education, unfortunately, can have its share of short-term fads, but Kāhui Ako are not one of them. In fact, effective schools and communities have taking this approach for decades. Kāhui Ako are schools collaborating to ensure that the student is at the centre of all activity, not just in the individual school that they are in at the time, but as students progress in education from early childhood centres through their schooling to tertiary and the workplace. Linwood College is in two Kāhui Ako. Tamai is the schools of Bamford, Bromley, Linwood Ave, Linwood College, Linwood North, Tamariki, and Te Waka Unua. Aupaki is Heathcote Valley, Linwood College, Lyttelton, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs and Sumner. One practical outcome already of our Kāhui Ako has been a specific focus on enrichment with students from our schools getting together for very successful eight week enrichment programmes in Maths, Debating, Pasifika and with Technology to come. Coast to Coast Update Article by The Press’ Robert van Royen – Sept, 2017 (paraphrased) Six Linwood College pupils are competing in the Tough Mudder event alongside Richie McCaw in Auckland in November, thanks to iSport Foundation and Coast-to-Coast Rangers. Linwood College’s Mapu Uasi, Moahengi Ngauamo, Juilan Elia-Lui, Tupito Saofai and Kyle Amer couldn't contain their excitement when they heard the news that they would be competing. They will all do the 20km mud and obstacle course, which is designed to test physical strength, stamina and mental grit.
McCaw's Foundation contacted Jess De Bont, who is currently training the pupils for next year's Coast-to-Coast and suggested the Tough Mudder event to her. "It's an amazing opportunity – once in a life time stuff," she said. “Auckland is a really good lead up for the Coastto-Coast,” said Jess De Bont.
Planting at Charlesworth Reserve Linwood College’s Year 7 & 8 students did an awesome job during a day of planting at Charlesworth Reserve according to Karla Guerin, the Kiwi Can Coordinator from the Graeme Dingle Foundation. Karla said that the planting day (late last term) was very hot and windy but the students all persevered and gave it their best. She said that it was great to see everyone fully engaged and work alongside each other with great teamwork.
Cultural Festival Linwood College presented three cultural dances at the 2017 Primary Schools’ Cultural Festival. Filipino students performed a sacred dance which was followed by a Samoan dance, ‘Do it, do it’ siva. The final item was a kapa haka and song ‘Kapi-oi-oi’. Our students made us proud while demonstrating the rich cultural diversity of our College.
Linwood College students’ Car Club had a great time at Ara Institute of Canterbury over Term 3, learning about all things cars. Under the careful guidance of Tutor Bernie Blanken, students learnt how to change tyres, jump-start flat batteries, strip down and rebuild a small fourstroke engine, disassemble and reassemble a gearbox as well as automotive welding. Students thanked Bernie by buying him a big box of chocolates at the end of the course.

Year 11's Tasha Matoe in Year 12/13 performers in ‘Harbouring Ghosts’, a play an adaptation of Hamlet’s about healing past mistakes. ‘Ophelia Thinks Harder’.
Masking Up Part of the Year 9 Drama curriculum is to focus on Drama technologies, so last term students worked on Mask Making. This is an important technology which has links to Greek Theatre and Commedia Del'Arte, both types of Drama which the students will be researching when they get to their NCEA studies.

'The Change Over' Review As a Christchurch resident from the Eastern suburbs, the movie ‘The Changeover’ is certainly well worth watching, not just for its plot but for the visually striking scenes of post-quake Christchurch. Aerial views show the lead character’s home surrounded by a sea of vacant lots and low-lying swampy stretches. Looking across to the city, with randomly plonked containers and road works, these scenes also tell part of our story. Linwood College is listed on the credits as many of our students were acting extras.

Bays’ fight to tournament final SPORTS By Gordon Findlater FERRYMEAD BAYS came within a whisker of winning the annual Coastal Spirit under-19 tournament held at Cuthberts Green over Labour weekend. The team dropped just one game on their way to the final before going down to Dunedin’s Green Island 1-2 in the tournament final. Bays were unbeaten on the opening day of the tournament. They began with a 1-1 draw with Waimak United before defeating Coastal Spirit 3-0 and Hornby United 2-0. On Sunday, Bays defeated Selwyn 2-0 in their first game of the day to book a spot in semi-final. Later that day, they played Green Island in their final pool game and went down 0-2. With both teams already assured of a semi-final spot, they elected to rest key players. Bays finished second in pool B to set up a semi-final match with pool A winner Dunedin Technical. Bays dominated the southerners from the beginning and quickly found themselves two

goals ahead. They rotated the bench in the second half and eventually won 4-0. Early wickets hurt Sumner in loss to Heathcote THE LOSS of three quick wickets early in their innings was too much for Sumner to overcome as they went down to Heathcote at the weekend. Sumner were defeated by five wickets in the senior A one-day match at Heathcote Domain. After setting the hosts a total of 187, Heathcote reached it in the 41st over. Sumner made a fiery start and were looking good at 40-1 before the loss of three quick wickets had them at 41-4. Captain Johnny Beveridge (above) then steered the ship with a knock of 63, recording his second half century in as many matches. His 71-run partnership with Michael Newton-Vesty helped restore the innings for Sumner before the regular fall of wickets saw them all out for 187 in the 43rd over. Sumner picked up the early wicket of Heathcote captain Matt House before John Garry (45) and Nick Durham (43) took Heathcote close to the halfway point. Matt Mealing then continued to take Heathcote towards their target with a knock of 55.
